Communities United for Rural Education campaign group protest Storm Abigail as schools shut

THE BIT OF LAND WHERE LERWICK AND GULBERWICK KINDA MEET – Prominent Shetland campaign group Communities United for Rural Education (CURE) have this evening marched to the site of the former Met Office between Gulberwick and Lerwick.

CURE, who have campaigned against Shetland Islands Council-led School Closures are protesting against Storm Abigail, which has closed every single school in Shetland on Friday 13th November.

A spokesperson for the group said: “All this time we thought that Da Cooncil were the enemy, but their pitiful effort to close our rural schools are nothing compared to Storm Abigail.

“Our members have been outside all day catching some of the storm in jars and tupperware containers so that Abigail, whoever she is, can be held to account.”

An SIC spokesperson said: “We’re just waiting for all this to blow over.”
